Review: 2016 Podere Scopetone Brunello di Montalcino
Scopetone is a smaller, family-run operation in the Tuscany region, with only 375 cases of Brunello produced annually. This 100% Sangiovese was aged in oak casks for 36 months followed by 12 months in glazed cement vats and an additional 4 months in bottle.
Earthy upfront, the wine evokes cedar, tobacco, and leather when first poured into the glass. With time, black cherry and sage make their way to the core and mellow some of the woodsy influence. On the palate, the black cherry note certainly leads the charge but fades with notes of plum, licorice vine, and a faint touch of minerality coming up on subsequent sips. Very well structured with fine tannins and just a touch of minerality and tobacco leaf on the finish.
This is drinkable now and does not run short on complexity, but could stand to enjoy some time quietly tucked away for a few years to reach its fullest potential.
