Smooth Ambler are a craft distillery Greenbrier County, West Virginia who have been making waves in the whiskey world for their excellent expressions, particularly their deliciously spicy rye whiskies. Proving that they can impress beyond just whisky is this interesting bottling. This is a citrusy, rich gin that has been matured oak barrels- 50% virgin oak, and the other half ex-bourbon, having previously held their laudable Old Scout whiskey. This is a practice that harks back to gin’s origins as genever- which was often rested in barrels, either during transport or to impart flavour.
Despite this history, the techniques had fallen by the wayside as gin became a clear spirit, and thus Smooth Ambler’s revival of this method is both interesting and innovative. The gin itself proves this is more than just a gimmick- peppery, with liquorice and citrusy botanicals, the barrel lends toffee-like buttery flavours reminiscent of bourbons. The extra proof at 49.5% ABV means that Smooth Ambler Double Barrel Gin is a powerful partner in any cocktail, standing up in even the most complex drinks. This gin is now discontinued, having been a part of the limited release Distiller’s Choice Stillhouse Collection- so get your hands on a bottle whilst you still can!
