Once past the impactful and smooth overtones, the palette gives way to a nutty vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, butterscotch, tobacco, and toffee. Don’t let the price fool you, as this premium rum could easily surpass a spirit twice its price in a blind taste test.
The Ron Abuelo Añejo distillery is founded on one specialty rum ingredient; locally grown sugarcane from their fertile land in the center of the Republic of Panamá. This specific spirit, being one of their more aged selections, provides a level of subtlety unmatched by other dark rums.
Due to its age, the burn of the cinnamon and spice mixture that comprises the dominant flavor profile of the spirit is subdued and instead gives way to delicate and woody aged white oak, of which the cask its aged in is constructed.
