The Maker's Mark® Wood Finishing Series 2023 Release: BEP is a limited-edition bourbon that features a lower barrel entry proof, resulting in bigger and bolder flavors. Crafted to showcase the influence of Maker's® unique, 110 barrel entry proof, this bourbon amplifies the balanced wood sugars, softer tannins, and lasting finish that are achieved with a low BEP. The use of special finishing staves amplifies notes of vanilla and sweet spice that naturally occur from lower BEPs. BEP is the fifth and final bourbon in this chapter of the Wood Finishing Series, and fans can look forward to the next series.
Toasty vanilla, subtle spice, caramel
Bright, vanilla, brown sugar
Medium body, balanced, rich caramel, dry baking spices
Cask Strength 109.6–110.7
Flavor Over Profit
In 1962, distillers were permitted to raise barrel entry proofs to 125, which may have produced more bourbon, but Maker's® intentionally kept their BEP at 110, making them the only major distillery at the time to do so. The belief was that a lower BEP delivers more flavor, smoothness, and even color. Extra water helps improve the congener concentration, which imparts flavors of caramel, vanilla, and baking spice. These decrease as BEPs increase.
Fifth & Final
This chapter of the Wood Finishing Series explored the nuanced techniques that helped the founders of Maker's Mark® deliver on their distinct taste vision. The next chapter will take on an entirely new theme, so fans can look forward to what's to come.
